Pool landscapes

A pool framed in native stone and planting, so it reads as part of the land.

Design the pool as part of the landscape, not as an object placed in it.

Water that belongs where it is

A pool installed well reads as part of the property: water framed by material that matches the site's geology and planting that carries the garden to its edge. Native stone is the main tool for that, from Westchester fieldstone to Hudson Valley bluestone.

We partner with specialized pool contractors for the shell and mechanical systems, and build the landscape around it ourselves: coping, terraces, walls, water features, planting and lighting.

Coping, terraces and planting

Coping. Bluestone is the most common choice on Westchester estates, thermaled for slip resistance or left natural-cleft. Fieldstone reads more rugged and suits properties with existing stone walls; granite is crisper and more formal.

The surround. Allow at least eight to ten feet between the pool and any wall or planting, and twelve to fifteen for generous lounging.

Planting. A border between lawn and coping, and plants that look right in every season, from spring bulbs to the winter structure of evergreens and grasses.

We walk the property, talk through what you want from it, and follow with a detailed proposal covering material specifications and a timeline.

Site analysis takes one to four weeks. Design development and construction drawings typically take four to twelve weeks once a concept is chosen.

Town permits typically take four to twelve weeks depending on the town. Work near a regulated wetland typically adds three to twelve months. We coordinate permits as part of the project.

A smaller project typically takes four to eight weeks to build. Estate-scale work runs from three months to a year or more.

Common questions

We partner with specialized pool contractors for the pool shell and mechanical systems, and handle the surrounding landscape ourselves: coping, hardscape, planting and lighting.

Bluestone is the most common, thermaled for slip resistance or natural-cleft. Fieldstone suits properties with existing stone walls, and granite suits contemporary or formal settings.

Typically a building permit, electrical and plumbing permits, and a fence or barrier permit, with setbacks from property lines, structures and septic systems. Pools within wetland buffers have further restrictions. We coordinate permits as part of the project.
